Come now, did you really think that Gernsback wouldn't have a jet pack up his sleeve?  This is an early model, so I won't ask why this guy has a jet coming sideways out of his helmet, but have you noticed that the lifting jets are hooked to a pivot on his collar?  Granted, it might help with the joystick, but I'd think it would make his spacesuit ride up in the crotch.
