In 1961, the hovercraft was the next big thing, and I do mean big.  Look at this prediction of the hovercraft of tomorrow from Practical Mechanics:  Nearly the size of the Queen Mary complete with swimming pool and four turbine engines big enough to lift Surbiton off the ground.  When this baby hits the shingles at Dover, there won't be an intact window south of Tunbridge Wells.

Pretty good for a time when most hovercraft looked like an unholy marriage between a scooter and a fan duct.
