This view of New York, supposedly of 1975, is interesting because it shows a similar sort of misplaced optimism.  The idea of Manhattan being ringed about with an elevated runway for flying wings is not the most likely of scenarios-- the Port Authority having a collective apoplectic fit is. 

By the bye, I do hope that the craft coming down in the river is landing and not crashing.  Not that it looks very pleasant in either case.
