The premise of Doppelgänger is simple.  An unmanned space probe sent to study the Sun by the European Eurosec space agency is pulled off  course and accidentally discovers a new planet in an identical but opposite orbit to the Earth.  Since the Cold War is still very much in play, Eurosec, with American funding, prepares a manned spacecraft with an Anglo-American crew to explore and possibly claim the new world before "they" do.

Key to this plan is the Phoenix; an interplanetary spacecraft that looks like a grown-up version of the Apollo Command Service Module.  Aside from being five times as big as a CSM, she has an internal docking bay for her landing craft, Rolls Royce rocket engines and no apparent storage area for fuel.
