By 1968, Braniff International airlines was a  bit impatient for the 21st century and decided to jumpstart things by dressing their stewardesses to look as if they'd just stepped off the set of Star Trek.

Not content with this, they even lumbered the ladies with this improbable space helmet; ostensively to protect the stewardess's hairdo while walking across the tarmac, though the Mark II version rumoured to incorporate a rocket pack made people suspicious.

You may be wondering why Braniff was so generous as to shell out for four different frocks for their stewardesses.  The answer is that it was actually one frock with four layers: one for getting to the plane in foul weather, one for greeting passengers and getting them settled, one for meals and drinks services, and one for seeing the passengers off.  Just strip each one away as the flight progresses

From the look of the pantaloons, I suspect that in-built flotation devices were incorporated as well.
