At the London Radio Exhibition of 1932,
"Professor" Harry May introduced the world to Alpha (AKA Roboter); the
one-ton mechanical marvel that would revolutionise the world. Or
do
sales pitches for toasters at Macy's department store–whichever
came first. Among its devastating powers, Alpha, who had a
disconcerting tendency to change heads and sex without notice, could
stand up, sit down, fire a gun and make derogatory remarks about women
and children in a voice reminiscent of a Cockney Dalek.
Touted by May as the "warrior of the future", among
other things, he, she, or it made history as the first robot capable
of not only smoking, but also developing a pack-a-day habit.
