Dr. Alex Zorka, the eponymous Phantom
of The Phantom Creeps (1939) is a mad scientist with a mission.
With the power of a radioactive meteor he discovered, his invisibility
belt, ray gun, and killer robot spiders he plans to conquer the world.
Aiding
Zoka in this mad scheme is his robot, which is the prototype of a
mechanical army. Since Zorka has to use a remote control box
strapped to his wrist to operate the robot, it's unclear how he'll
handle a whole division of them. In the meantime, the
robot really doesn't do much of anything beyond some light house
moving, menacing Zorka's assistant, and lumbering toward the camera
during the closing credits. This is just as well, since on the
robot's one and only clash with the US Army it lasted a grand total of
two minutes before it was blown up by a single burst of machine gun
fire.
Zorka must have been working on a
pretty low budget. It's the only explanation I can find for the
recycled Mardi Gras mask he used for the robot's head. |
