And don't you wish they hadn't?
Just staggering over the line of
Future Past is the most recognisable cyborg, the Six Million Dollar
Man. Based on the novel Cyborg by Martin Caidin,
SMDM started out as a relatively sober story about a man who was
horribly mangled in an air crash only to be rebuilt by a secret
government agency as a weapon.
The mechanical limbs and eye
described were extrapolations of artificial replacements already under
development in the late '60s and Caidin tried to remain within the
realm of possibility in his book. However, in translating the
novel to television, Caidin's idea of a cyborg was rapidly replaced by
juvenile fare that ignored both technology and basic physics.
Want to pick up a car with one hand? Mechanical arm? Check.
Mechanical legs? Check. Mechanical spine and back muscles?
