From Amazing Stories December 1938:

Great engineering skill and ingenuity will be necessary to produce a ship capable of flying to other worlds.  The Space Ship shown here is based on theoretical extensions of known fact.

Welcome aboard the Buck Rogers Special.  This 1938 depiction of what to expect in 2038 shows that there was a long road where it came to figuring out the whole space ship thing.   However, this picture also shows how terribly wrong we've gone with our space programme.  Sure, the artist was a bit hazy as to how exactly rockets worked (this one is more like an open-ended car piston; spark plug and all) and the fuel tanks wouldn't hold enough to keep a scooter going, but at least he had the foresight to include a spinning passenger section complete with gymnasium, theatre, and lounge.  Ever see any of those on the Shuttle?  NASA, hold your head in shame!
