One up on the a-bomb out the back idea was Daedalus
from the British Interplanetary Society. This two-stage unmanned
probe was intended to carry out a flyby of the Proxima Centauri system
in about 40 years. It's neatly conservative engineering is only
somewhat undercut by the fact that it's fusion drive is still far
beyond any technology known outside of Star Trek. |
