The Orion project didn't go very far.  I suppose putting a nuclear arsenal in orbit didn't have that much long-term attraction, but it did inspire a number of designs for the Helios spacecraft.  The difference between Orion and Helios was that in Orion the explosions were on the outside the craft. 

For Helios, they were on the inside, which raised it to another level of insanity.
