Archimedean screws as a form of propulsion look daft, but are actually in use today for specialist vehicles that have to contend with snow, slush and mud. But that wasn't enough for the 1930's, so naturally the first application to be considered was for transatlantic passenger  liners.

Streamlined passenger liners, of course.
